Birth of an Empire

The PoD is - Kievan Rus never fragments into tiny pieces, instead splitting into three large ones: Novgorod, Polotsk and Kiev. Later on, the King of the nascent Lithuanian state, Mindaugas, does not accept Christianity, instead choosing to preserve the Pagan religion and traditions of the country. This allows the country to stay united and defeat the Teutonic Order in the Prussian rebellion. Mindaugas is never assassinated and his successors gradually expand the country. As Kiev is strong, it is able to wither the Mongol attacks. This means that the Ukrainian steppe does not need liberation by Lithuania, so the focus of Lithuanian Kings shifts to the West - the Orders are defeated, and even Denmark loses a war against this new power. There are some clashes with Russian principalities, of course, but they are not that many and in general, the relations between Lithuania, Kiev and Novgorod are usually above average. Poland, on the other hand, is constantly eyeing its Northeastern neighbour, both with jealousy and some fear.
